Lord Ravensdale, a Midlands-based crossbench member of the House of Lords, has today called for an evidence-based plan for recovery, highlighting the work of the Midlands Engine Observatory.

In his contribution to this afternoon’s debate in the House of Lords on ‘The case for post-Covid-19 recovery strategies that will contribute to a fairer, cleaner, and more sustainable economy’, Lord Ravensdale said:

Fairness must also be a priority of the recovery. Thousands of new highly skilled jobs are needed to rejuvenate and level up the regions.

Data must play a key role here on how Government policy is targeted. I would highlight here the excellent work of the Midlands Engine Observatory’s Independent Economic Review, in providing a unique dataset on the Midlands economy, which should be a key reference point for designing a recovery plan that fits the Midlands.

The Observatory is a crucial cog of the Midlands Engine, providing comprehensive and contemporary data, analysis and intelligence on the whole Midlands economy. It brings together a unique collaboration of leading researchers and academics from our region’s universities, partner organisations and private sector research specialists.

In addition to the Midlands Engine Independent Economic Review, published earlier this year and referenced by Lord Ravensdale, the Observatory publishes a fortnightly Covid-19 Economic Impact Monitor for the Midlands. These reports draw together data and intelligence on how the pandemic is affecting our region’s economy and underpins Midlands Engine discussions with businesses and partners; helping to inform preparations for recovery and ensure the pressures on our region are well understood by Government.
